Star Choices Inc. is a Non profit service provider. Program serves 90+ folks in GA. 3 major locations Bibb, Hall, and Stephens Counties.
Star Choices Inc. has seen how consistent, high quality, continually learning/growing in leadership within an organization can transform the organization completely. Unfortunately, Star Choice’s Inc. has also seen how (budget cuts, staff turnover, a regression from continuous learning for staff) can hurt the outcomes & choices for the people Star Choices Inc. supports. It is with this understanding of the importance of leadership and its relationship to outcomes for the people we support that development for leadership at all levels was discussed.
Robert Chandler, Star Choices Inc. & Bethany Toledo, OADSP came together to create the initial concepts for creating a leadership retreat in Georgia.
Georgia Stakeholder Group (we) was formed (10/2016) including providers, advocates, state officials, and other partners. The meeting in October 2016, the group worked on what we wanted from a 3-day leadership experience. The completely voluntary stakeholder group helped to assure we created a meaningful experience for each participant with subsequent meetings gatherings and discussions.
Many of the identified crucial curricula identified by the group were present in a curriculum developed by the Ohio Alliance of Direct Support Professionals (OADSP). We purchased much of the Curriculum and adapted it to the state of Georgia. We added new material/sessions and left out less applicable sessions.
We wanted to create a retreat that would be memorable for participants, all folks to leave with tools to help them on their leadership journey, as well as helping leaders connect with others apart from their own organizations.
